Rep. Niemerg Legislation Allows for Free Fishing for Veterans and Others Each Veterans Day

State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) is pleased to announce that today the Illinois House passed unanimously House Bill (HB) 3752 to give authority to the Director of Natural Resources to designate Veterans Day each year as a day when sport fishermen may fish Illinois waters without requiring a license or stamp. This includes fishing in the part of Lake Michigan within the state of Illinois, but does not apply to commercial fishing. This legislation now heads over to the Senate for consideration.

“I, like many people, believe that the service our veterans give to our country is very much appreciated and whenever we can find a way to say THANK YOU, we should,” said Rep. Adam Niemerg. “Fishing is one of those activities that no matter how young or old you are, or how experienced you are, you can have fun with family and friends fishing in our wonderful lakes and rivers in Illinois.”

The director may already issue special fishing permits without cost for a group event, restricted to specific dates and locations if it is determined by the Department of Natural Resources that the event is beneficial in promoting sport fishing in Illinois.
