Dieterich, IL – State Representative Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) announced today that the results of the flag redesign contest are in following five weeks of voting. The results show that people favor retaining the current state flag over ten new designs and two former designs.
“The public has spoken with a loud voice that they overwhelmingly want to keep our current Illinois State Flag,” declared Rep. Niemerg. “Thank you to everyone who signed my petition and voted in the online competition for the Illinois State Flag!”

You may watch Rep. Niemerg speak to this topic on the floor of the Illinois House on Thursday at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XK_7j4l8nwM.
Niemerg points out that nearly 385,000 votes were cast, and over 165,000 (43 percent) were cast for the current Illinois state flag. It received more votes than the next five top designs combined.
The Illinois Flag Commission is directed to submit a report detailing its findings and recommendations to the state’s General Assembly by April 1. Lawmakers will then vote on whether to adopt a new state flag, return to a previous design, or keep the current one.
